Tabacon: a model of Social Responsibility Leadership in La Fortuna

An important part of Tabacón’s legacy to the community has been made possible through our leadership in social responsibility. Tabacón actively supports the wellbeing of children in La Fortuna by participating in specially chosen community programs that improve their educational and cultural opportunities, as well as the conservation of its natural environment and ecosystems.

The following is a brief sample of activities in which Tabacon has participated plans for 2008.

Educational programs.

Computer Donation Program

The Hogarcito San Juan Bosco shelter for abandoned children with special social circumstances and economic needs, many of whom suffer from physical or mental disabilities, is supported financially and with food by both Tabacón and its employees.

Our efforts to improve the educational level and raise the living conditions of the students at Z-13 school, a rural area school, have resulted with its recent qualification as an Experimental Bilingual School, a high distinction for this underpriviledged area.

Environmental Conservancy

Costa Rica’s leadership in ecological protection is world famous, and Tabacón’s commitment to our community includes the protection and defense to our beautiful ecosystems. The Green Brigade is an effort by our employees to empower the community the area of recycling, reforestation, and the protection of the area rivers.

Plans for 2008

In 2008 we are planning to extend our reach in the community to include a program to endow public schools with computers and training. We are also planning programs to involve our guests in the community, such as Adopt a Tree and other ecological tourism opportunities.

These programs are funded through guests’ voluntary donation of $3 per night at our hotel. Most of our guests join us in this wonderful effort. However, guests who do not wish to participate, should let the receptionist know at check out.

Investing in a child future is an easy task with many rewards. We are proud of our efforts to give our children better opportunities for education and cultural activities, as well as provide children with the priceless gift of a better environment.
