TEMAZCAL - A PREHISPANIC RITUAL FOR BODY AND SOUL PURIFICATION

THE BEST BODY AND SOUL PURIFICATION IN THE EARTH OF NATURE

The Temazcal is a type of sweat lodge which originated with pre-Hispanic local natives in Mesoamerica. The word Temazcal comes from the Nahuatl word temazcalli ("house of heat"). In ancient Mesoamerica Temazcal was used as part of a curative ceremony thought to purify the body, mind and soul. It was also used as a place to heal the sick, improve health, and as a site for women to give birth. It continues to be used today for spiritual and health benefits among indigenous Mexican and Central American cultures that were part of the ancient Mesoamerican region. It is currently being rediscovered as a means for the cleansing of mind, body and spirit for all people.

The sweat lodge is also called a purification ceremony, sweat house, medicine lodge or medicine house. The Temazcal (sweat lodge) is constructed from volcanic rock and cement, and is usually circular in shape with a dome overhead. Volcanic stones are heated for two hours prior and then placed into a hole dug in the center of the ground in the Temazcal to create the heat used in the ceremony.

The Temazcal ritual consists of 60 minutes divided into four parts of 15 minutes each. Each stage evokes one of the four basic elements: air, water, fire and earth. During the ritual, the guide (shaman) may introduce prayers, songs, and drum sounds. Inside the Temazcal, warmth and darkness envelop the participants, encouraging a connection to the heart and soul, a freeness to be oneself, and an openness of feelings, concerns and emotions. Participants wear simple garments such as shorts or loose dresses to encourage breathing and comfort.
In addition to all Temazcal benefits, Tabacon offers the perfect natural setting for a distinctive relaxation experience. The unique combination of the energy of the active Arenal Volcano, the heat of the Tabacon Hot Springs and the purity and mysticism of the surrounding rainforest blend into what many have described as "paradise" or "the eighth wonder of the world." The four elements of nature - air, water, fire, and earth -- are all present in this Arenal Volcano luxury hotel and resort, as evidenced by the heat of the volcano, the flowing waters of the hot springs, the beauty of the surrounding nature, and the pure air of the rainforest.
